Creamy, dreamy mashed potatoes are the ultimate comfort food and a perfect side dish for any occasion. This quick and easy recipe delivers decadently smooth mashed potatoes in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream, warm (or substitute with whole milk or half-and-half)
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or roasted (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the russet potatoes into even chunks, about 1-2 inches in size.
  2. Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  3. Drain the potatoes in a colander. Return them to the pot and heat for 1-2 minutes over low heat to evaporate any excess moisture.
  4. In a small saucepan, gently heat the heavy cream and butter until melted and warm.
  5. Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the potatoes until smooth. If you prefer a chunkier texture, mash lightly.
  6. Gradually pour the warm cream and butter mixture into the potatoes, stirring with a wooden spoon until fully combined and silky smooth.
  7. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. If using garlic, mix it in now.
  8. Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish and garnish with fresh herbs or a pat of butter if desired.

Notes

[‘Start with cold water to ensure even cooking.’, ‘Avoid overmixing to prevent gluey texture.’, ‘Warm your dairy ingredients to keep the potatoes fluffy.’, ‘Choose starchy potatoes like russets for the best texture.’, ‘Roast garlic for a milder flavor.’]
