A rich and silky dark chocolate fondue perfect for dipping fresh strawberries and marshmallows. Quick and easy to prepare, this dessert is ideal for sharing or enjoying solo.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz (225 g) dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa content)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp (28 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp (12 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Fresh strawberries, washed and hulled (about 1 pint / 450 g)
  • Marshmallows (mini or regular size, about 1 cup / 50 g)
  • Optional dippers: banana slices, pretzel sticks, pound cake cubes

Instructions

  1. Finely chop 8 oz (225 g) of dark chocolate into small, even pieces. Set aside. (5 minutes)
  2. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream and 2 tablespoons (28 g) unsalted butter. Warm over medium heat until just simmering, do not boil. (5 minutes)
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat, add the chopped chocolate, 1 tablespoon (12 g) granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Let sit for 1-2 minutes to soften the chocolate.
  4. Stir gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is glossy and smooth. If needed, place the bowl over simmering water (double boiler) and stir until silky. (3-4 minutes)
  5. Pour the melted chocolate into a warmed fondue pot or heatproof serving bowl. Cover with foil if no fondue pot is available to retain heat.
  6. Wash and hull fresh strawberries (about 1 pint / 450 g). Arrange strawberries, marshmallows, and any additional dippers on a serving platter. (5-10 minutes)
  7. Serve immediately using skewers or fondue forks to dip strawberries and marshmallows into the warm chocolate. Stir occasionally to keep chocolate smooth.

Notes

If chocolate thickens while serving, add a splash of warm cream and stir to loosen. Use a double boiler to prevent scorching. Keep fondue pot on low heat or stir frequently if no fondue pot is available. Adding a pinch of sea salt enhances chocolate flavor. Variations include using milk or white chocolate, dairy-free cream and butter substitutes, and flavor infusions like orange zest or liqueur.
