- featured image

Layers of fluffy whipped cream, juicy berries, and soft sponge cake come together in this festive and easy-to-make 4th of July dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound cake or angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries
  • 1 pint fresh raspberries (optional)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
  • Sprinkles in red, white, and blue for extra pizzazz (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: If using a homemade pound cake or angel food cake, bake it according to your recipe and let it cool completely. Slice it into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Slice the Strawberries: Wash and hull the strawberries, then slice them thinly. Set aside along with the blueberries and raspberries.
  3. Whip the Cream: Pour the heavy whipping cream into a large mixing bowl. Add the sugar and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form—this should take about 3–5 minutes. Be careful not to overbeat!
  4. Assemble the Trifle: Start with a layer of cake cubes at the bottom of your trifle dish. Follow with a layer of whipped cream, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Then, add a layer of strawberries, creating a vibrant red layer. Repeat the process, alternating layers of cake, whipped cream, blueberries, and raspberries until the dish is filled.
  5. Decorate: Top the final layer with a generous dollop of whipped cream and arrange a mix of berries on top. Add a few fresh mint leaves or festive sprinkles for a fun, patriotic touch.
  6. Chill: Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
  7. Serve: Grab a spoon and dig in, scooping deep to get all the layers onto each plate.

Notes

[‘Use chilled heavy cream for the quickest and fluffiest whipped cream.’, ‘If your berries aren’t sweet enough, toss them with a tablespoon of sugar before layering.’, ‘Save time by using store-bought cake or pre-whipped cream, but fresh ingredients are key.’, ‘For an adult twist, drizzle a bit of Grand Marnier or Amaretto over the cake layers.’]
