Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for rolling)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tablespoons eggnog
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • Pinch of salt (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Let butter and eggs come to room temperature.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract. Mix until fully combined.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, mixing on low or with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Mix 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Scoop dough into 1-inch balls (about 1 tablespoon each). Roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  7. Place balls 2 inches apart on prepared sheets. Gently press your thumb or the back of a teaspoon into the center to make a deep well.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are set and centers are puffed but still soft.
  9. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, eggnog, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until thick but pourable.
  11. Once cookies are cool, spoon or pipe about 1/2 teaspoon glaze into each thumbprint well. Let set for 20 minutes, or until glaze firms up.

Notes

Chill dough for 15 minutes if sticky. Bake one sheet at a time for even results. For a crisper cookie, bake 1-2 minutes longer. Adjust glaze consistency with more powdered sugar or eggnog. Store cookies in a single layer until glaze sets. Cookies can be made gluten-free or dairy-free with substitutions.
