  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup festive candy-coated chocolate bits (like M&M’s holiday mix)
  • 1/2 cup chopped white chocolate or dark chocolate (optional)
  • Extra candy bits for pressing on top before baking (optional)
  • Festive sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter with granulated sugar and light brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Beat in eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add vanilla and almond extract (if using); blend until combined.
  5. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture, mixing on low just until no flour streaks remain.
  6. Using a spatula, gently fold in chocolate chips and festive candy bits. If desired, add chopped white or dark chocolate.
  7. Scoop dough by heaping tablespoon (or use a 1.5-inch ice cream scoop) onto prepared baking sheets, spacing cookies about 2 inches apart.
  8. Press extra candy bits or sprinkles on top of each dough ball for a festive look.
  9. Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until edges are golden and centers look just set.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 3-5 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.

Notes

For thicker cookies, chill the dough for 20-30 minutes before baking. Do not overmix the dough after adding flour. Cookies may look underdone in the center but will set as they cool. Swap in gluten-free flour or plant-based butter for dietary needs. Press extra candy bits on top for a festive look.
