Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box of your favorite brownie mix (recommend Ghirardelli)
  • Eggs as called for on the box (usually 2 large eggs, room temperature)
  • Vegetable oil or melted butter, per brownie mix instructions (about ½ cup / 120 ml)
  • Water (usually ¼ cup / 60 ml, check your mix)
  • ½ cup (85 g) semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening
  • Thin licorice strings or edible gold glitter (optional)
  • 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) milk or cream (use almond milk for dairy-free)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black or dark brown food coloring gel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your 9×9-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
  2. Prepare the brownie batter according to the box instructions by combining the brownie mix, eggs, oil, and water in a large bowl and stirring until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  3. Pour batter into the pan and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  4. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  5. Make the frosting by whisking powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add a drop of black or brown food coloring gel to tint the frosting like a graduation cap. Adjust consistency as needed.
  6. Cut the brownies into 1.5-inch (4 cm) squares.
  7. Spread a thin layer of frosting on top of each brownie square.
  8. Melt chocolate chips with coconut oil in the microwave in 15-second bursts, stirring until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag or small plastic bag with a tiny corner snipped.
  9. Pipe a small circle of chocolate in the center of each brownie square to anchor the tassel, then pipe a thin line trailing off the side to mimic the tassel’s string.
  10. Optionally, attach a tiny piece of licorice or sprinkle edible gold glitter on the tassel while the chocolate is still wet.
  11. Let the chocolate set at room temperature or in the fridge for about 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use firm, well-chilled brownies so the caps hold their shape. Cool brownies completely before frosting to avoid smudging. Use fresh eggs and room temperature ingredients for best texture. If frosting is too stiff, add milk one drop at a time. Melt chocolate slowly and stir often to keep smooth. Clean knife between cuts for neat squares. Tassels don’t have to be perfect; the handmade look adds charm.
