Instructions

  1. Prepare the Base Mix (10 minutes): In a large pitcher, combine 4 cups (960 ml) of tomato juice with 1½ cups (360 ml) vodka. Add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of fresh lemon juice and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of lime juice. Stir gently to combine.
  2. Add Seasonings (5 minutes): Mix in 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons (10 ml) horseradish, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) celery salt, ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) smoked paprika, and ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) freshly ground black pepper. Add hot sauce to taste—start with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) and adjust later.
  3. Chill the Base (at least 30 minutes): Cover the pitcher and refrigerate the mixture to allow flavors to meld.
  4. Prepare Garnishes (20 minutes): Arrange celery stalks, parsley, dill, pickles, olives, pepperoncini, cherry tomatoes, bacon strips, cheese cubes, and other toppings in separate bowls or on platters. Cut lemon and lime wedges for easy squeezing.
  5. Set Up the Bar Station (10 minutes): Lay out glasses, stirrers, cocktail picks, and napkins. Place the base mix pitcher front and center, with garnishes artfully arranged around.
  6. Serve and Customize (ongoing): Encourage guests to build their own drinks by combining the base with their favorite garnishes and seasoning to taste.
  7. Keep Extras Ready: Have extra ice on hand, and consider a small bowl of salted rims (mix kosher salt with a bit of celery salt) for that classic touch.

Notes

Taste the base mix before serving and adjust Worcestershire sauce or celery salt as needed. Prep garnishes the night before and keep them covered in the fridge to save time. Store celery and pickled veggies in ice-cold water or lightly salted brine to keep crisp. Use large ice cubes to prevent quick dilution. Rim glasses with a mix of celery salt, kosher salt, and smoked paprika for extra flavor. Leftover base can be refrigerated up to 3 days; stir before reuse. Garnishes are best fresh but pickled items last about a week refrigerated. For a non-alcoholic version, omit vodka and add extra lemon juice and pickle brine.
