These crispy witch’s finger cookies are a fun, spooky Halloween treat featuring a classic shortbread dough shaped into tapered logs with an almond ‘nail’ at the tip. They are easy to make, require simple pantry ingredients, and offer a satisfying snap and crunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 to 24 whole almonds (for nails)
  • Yellow or orange gel food coloring (optional, for dirty tips)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Beat on low speed until combined, then increase to medium and beat for another minute until smooth.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed or by hand until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Remove about 1/4 cup of dough and mix in 1-2 drops of gel food coloring to create the ‘dirty’ tip color.
  7. Roll the remaining white dough into a log about 1 inch in diameter. Cut into 12-16 equal pieces and roll each into a tapered cylinder (2-3 inches long).
  8. Place the dough cylinders on the prepared baking sheets, leaving 1 inch of space between each.
  9. Press one almond into the thicker end of each cookie to resemble a fingernail.
  10. Optionally, press a tiny amount of the colored dough onto the tip of the almond and cookie to look like a grimy nail.
  11. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the edges are lightly golden and the cookies are firm to the touch.
  12. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened but not melted to prevent greasy dough. Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough cookies. For crispness, ensure cookies are baked until firm. If cookies lose crispness, reheat at 300°F for 5 minutes. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
