Fun Mummy Pigs in a Blanket - featured image

A spooky and savory Halloween appetizer featuring mini hot dogs wrapped in flaky puff pastry strips to resemble mummies, topped with mozzarella eyes. This easy-to-make recipe is perfect for parties and requires minimal prep time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1215 mini hot dogs (all-beef or turkey)
  • 2 packages (14 oz each) puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2430 mini mozzarella balls (for eyes)
  • Black olives or pretzel pieces (for pupils)
  • Garlic powder (pinch)
  • Salt (pinch)
  • Poppy seeds or sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Pat mini hot dogs dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  3. Roll out puff pastry sheets and cut into 1-inch wide strips.
  4. Wrap dough strips around each hot dog, leaving a small gap at the top for the eyes. Overlap strips slightly to create a bandage look.
  5. Place two mini mozzarella balls on the exposed top of each mummy for eyes. Add olive slices or pretzel pieces for pupils and secure with a wooden toothpick if needed.
  6. Brush the dough generously with the egg wash, then sprinkle with garlic powder and salt.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the pastry is puffed and deep golden brown, rotating the pan halfway through.
  8. Cool for 2-3 minutes on the pan, remove toothpicks, and serve warm with mustard or ketchup.

Notes

Ensure the puff pastry remains cold while working to prevent sticking. Do not wrap the entire hot dog; leave space at the top for the eyes. Remove toothpicks before serving to avoid choking hazards. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free puff pastry. These can be frozen before baking and baked from frozen, adding 5 minutes to cook time.
