A quick, easy, and forgiving dessert featuring tender apples topped with a crunchy, nutty oat streusel. Perfect for busy weeknights or cozy gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 67 large apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and cornstarch until evenly coated. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine rolled oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
  4. Add cold cubed butter to the dry topping ingredients. Use a pastry cutter, forks, or fingers to work the butter in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized clumps.
  5. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the oat streusel topping over the apples, covering the entire surface.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  8. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow juices to thicken.

Notes

Use cold butter for the topping to ensure crunchy clumps. A mix of tart and sweet apples works best. For gluten-free, use GF flour blend and certified GF oats. For vegan, use plant-based butter. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
